Altars and people

The institution of the altar is found in the cult ritual of all the religions of the ancient Near East. Some scholars believe that the origins of the altar are in sacred stones  which had served as monuments as well as places of sacrifice. Altars also doubled as reminders of important events that took place on specific spots, such as victory in war or the vouchsafing of divine promises.
